MicroSearch, Inc. opened its doors in 1983
as a full-service dealer for Commodore,
Apple, and IBM PC's in a little showroom
in Southwest Houston. The computer industry
was growing fast and the price of personal
computers was high but coming down in price
quickly. The IBM PC was still a machine
that cost about $3000 and the industry was
earnestly looking for a cheaper machine.
The Commodore 64 was a big seller for MicroSearch
and a computer system could be assembled
for about $600. The Commodore 64 remains
to this day the most popular computer ever
sold!
In
1986, MicroSearch moved to a 7000-square-foot
showroom located off of the Southwest Freeway.
The Commodore-Amiga 1000 was released and
became a hit. Computer enthusiasts were
astonished by the Amiga, its multitasking
capabilities, and the infamous "boing"
demonstration of a ball bouncing around
a screen in stereo sound. After some initial
growing pains of the Amiga, the Amiga 500
and Amiga 2000 became available and becomes
another big seller. Because of their service
and selection, MicroSearch would become
the premiere Amiga dealer in Houston. MicroSearch
promoted the Amiga like no other reseller.
One
of the ways that MicroSearch supported the
growth of the Amiga was by holding "Amiga
Expos", which were gatherings of many
Amiga software and hardware developers to
come and show their goods to Texas area
Amiga enthusiasts. These Expos were extremely
popular and were once able to draw the interests
of the principle developer of the Amiga,
Jay Miner (a.k.a. "The Father of the
Amiga"), to come and sign autographs
for the attendees. MicroSearch, with its
development and sales of the Amiga products
like the ChromaKey+ and the ColorSplitter,
was quickly becoming a video/graphic oriented
sales, reseller, and supporter. The Amiga
computer as a whole was seeing its strength
in video and graphics becoming its main
focus and hence the focus of MicroSearch.
In
1992, MicroSearch became the premiere NewTek
Video Toaster dealer. The Video Toaster
revolutionized the video production industry
with the first complete video production
studio in a box. For the first time, professional
video hardware was within the grasp of the
consumer, and MicroSearch was the largest
Texas Authorized Dealer. MicroSearch partnered
seminars, training, and expositions with
its manufacturers to ensure its customers
were informed and knowledgeable about the
available solutions. MicroSearch offers
competitive prices, flexible configuration,
and excellent support of various video production
hardware and software! MicroSearch also
became the first Houston reseller of the
FAST Video Machine from FAST Electronics,
solidifying MicroSearch as a professional
supplier of video hardware.
