Producing the Documentary:  Learn the basics of non-fiction filmmaking.

(Prerequisite:  Film Production I).

Dates:  July 21 – 24, 2008

Who should take this course?
Anyone who wants to learn how to produce a documentary.

What will I learn?
Making a documentary is a completely different experience from working on a Hollywood film, and if you’re going to work in this genre, you’ll need to have a different set of skills.  In this class, you will learn all phases of making a nonfiction short film.

Day 1
On day 1, you will learn to develop, write and structure a documentary idea for production.  You will learn how an idea becomes a documentary through research and by drafting a treatment.   Next, you will see how to make contact with prospective subjects and schedule interviews.  Learn techniques to gain trust in your subjects and get them to open up in front of the camera.  Finally, we will screen some of the most renowned documentaries to inspire and demonstrate style and technique.

Days 2 & 3
Explore the technical and creative role the video camera plays in documentary filmmaking.  We will shoot a short documentary, and gain practical experience handling the camera in a variety of situations.

You will gain practical experience with sound, lighting and camera movement.  You will also have the opportunity to solve creative and technical problems faced by all documentarians in the field.

Day 4
You will learn the art of carving out the story from the raw footage shot in the days before.  In this phase, you learn critical editorial skills needed for creating compelling yet entertaining nonfiction, short film.
