(Prerequisite: Film Production I).
August 18 – 21, 2008
Who should take this course?
Anyone who wants to learn how to create a good narrative short for a film festival or internet distribution.
What will I learn?
The pace of this four day course is feverish. You must be prepared to live and breathe filmmaking for the duration of the course. You will understand the requirements and rigors of narrative filmmaking, as well as the exhilaration of producing a short film from start to finish.
Day 1
The program begins with a day of intensive study in writing, camera and directing. We will learn the three phases of a film: preproduction, physical production and post. First, we start where every narrative film begins…the story. We will concentrate on the basics: what makes a good story, the three elements of story telling and character development. You will learn the movie script, including terminology and format.
Next, we will take a short script and break it down for production. You will learn the basics of budgeting and learn how to work within your means. More importantly, you will learn how to do this without compromising on creativity. With those boundaries in mind, you will participate in finding locations, props, costumes and actors. Finally, we will revise the script to accommodate any last minute changes in locations or actors availability.
Days 2 & 3
We will dedicate two days to physical production. You will have an opportunity to direct the cast and crew. We will use our in house soundstage as well exterior locations. You will gain a working knowledge of lights, cameras and sound recording devices. You will learn how to direct a scene to creatively tell a story that is mentally engaging and visually stimulating.
Day 4
The last day will concentrate on editorial. We will discuss and demonstrate what constitutes a good take. Using the same cutting edge equipment the pros use, you will learn first hand what stays in the film and what winds up on the cutting room floor. At the end of the day, we will screen the finished project. |
